Escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East, including Houthi threats and an Iranian MP's April 30, 2026, statement on Yemen's preparations to block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—a chokepoint for 12% of global trade and key Gulf oil exports—have sustained a risk premium in energy markets, pushing Brent crude above $110 per barrel. Yet IMF PortWatch data confirms 7-day average ship transits at around 33 arrivals, far exceeding the 10-ship threshold for effective closure, with volumes roughly 50% below pre-2023 peaks due to persistent diversions. Elevated container freight rates (Asia-Europe up 25-40%) and Baltic Dry Index near 2670 reflect ongoing rerouting costs, as trader consensus prices low near-term shutdown odds amid historical rhetoric without action; watch IMF updates and U.S. naval responses for shifts.
