'It's not going to be me.' Trump looks ahead to 2028 GOP nominee.

WASHINGTON ‒ President Donald Trump said in his clearest terms yet that he won't be the 2028 Republican presidential nominee, predicting his GOP successor will be someone else in his administration.

Trump remarked on the next presidential race during a marathon Cabinet meeting as he argued Republicans will be in better position than Democrats in 2028 because of the latter's "really bad policy."

"It’s not going to be me," Trump said. "It’s going to be somebody that’s probably sitting at this table. It could be a couple of people sitting at this table – could be a couple of people running together sitting at this table."

Others seated at the Cabinet table included Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio ‒ both considered strong candidates to run to succeed Trump as the GOP nominee.

After teasing a possible unconstitutional third term for much of his first year back in office, Trump has made several remarks acknowledging that he can’t run again in 2028.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice." Nonetheless, Trump for months toyed with the idea of running again and even sold Trump 2028 hats.

Vice President JD Vance speaks during a Cabinet Meeting hosted by President Donald Trump in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, DC on December 2, 2025.

"I would say that if you read it, it’s pretty clear, I’m not allowed to run," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Oct. 29. "It’s too bad."

In August, Trump told reporters Vance is the "most likely" heir to Trump's MAGA movement and would "probably be favored at this point" to secure the 2028 Republican nomination. But the president has also spoken glowingly of Rubio, who ran against Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary.
