📊 The Illinois Black Business Survey shows: -Black residents make up 14% of Illinois’ population but own only 2% of employer businesses. -64% of those Black-owned businesses are led by women. -85% of employees in Black-owned firms are Black — meaning growth directly benefits the community. These numbers tell a story of resilience, underrepresentation, and untapped potential. They also highlight the urgent need for intentional investment in Black entrepreneurship. 🌸 Today, I had the honor of watching one of those businesses break ground right here on 79th Street in Chicago. Tatiana Williams, founder of Tatis Floral, is a Black woman entrepreneur who is transforming a dream into a brick-and-mortar reality. Her floral shop isn’t just a business — it’s a symbol of what’s possible when capital, coaching (shout out to Oleg Grachev), and community support are aligned with vision. Despite systemic barriers, Tatiana has rooted herself in her neighborhood and is blooming with purpose. Her business will bring beauty, jobs, and inspiration to a corridor that needs more of all three. At Greenwood Archer Capital, we’re proud to have supported this project with the flexible capital it needed to get off the ground — literally. Congratulations, Tatiana. You are what economic justice in action looks like. 🌱

The Knight Foundation has awarded $19.8M to 12 Detroit projects, including Black Tech Saturdays, founded in 2023 by husband-wife duo Johnnie and Alexa Turnage. The group will receive $2M to scale Detroit’s equity-focused tech economy by connecting residents with high-growth jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities. Sometimes you listen to an interview and stop what you're doing to take notes. I have experienced every single thing in the quotes below leading an organization and navigating fundraising. It is one of the reasons much of our reimagined direction is shifting towards regranting more to help business owners implement the sustainable changes we educate and advocate for. I don't personally know Dwan Dandridge but Black Leaders Detroit is one of my favorite organizations in Michigan. I'm positive I name them as a model of excellence to study in more than half of my meetings with funders. We need a strategic shift towards more no interest loans and grants outside the realm of pitch competitions. ----- "There seems to be no room for criticism in the small business support ecosystem… it feels like entrepreneurs are reluctant to say if a product, service, or funding they received was good or bad because they might get blackballed." ----- "What I hear people say privately about some of the things out there versus what they say when the cameras are on… or when the organization they received it from is in the room… can be very different. We should be welcoming that feedback. That feedback is a gift. It can only make us better. Our space can be competitive when it comes to funding… and when people have a scarcity mindset, they worry that if people start saying their programs are not good, the funding might go somewhere else." ----- “I got a call literally the day after the election in November… and a funder (we were waiting on a large commitment from them) was like, ‘Hey, what y’all going to do now? Are y’all going to shift some things?’.....And what we committed to our funders is something that we’re comfortable with, and that is: we’re going to be strategic. We’re not going to be out there in the line of fire if we can avoid it. But while we’re strategic, we’re going to be strong, proud, and Black. When we discuss the challenges facing women in the workplace today, it’s impossible to ignore the unique situation of women of color. While reports show us that all women are struggling, especially when it comes to promotions and climbing the ladder, the numbers are even more dire for Black women and other women of color seeking leadership positions or facing discrimination. McKinsey & Company’s recent report revealed that 8 in 10 Black women in leadership experienced burnout in 2025. This year promises to be just as difficult.    Routine discrimination, toxic work environments, anxieties around layoffs, and so much more can play a major role in this burnout. Pushing back is difficult. In these times, it’s important to remember:    ☑️  Don’t hesitate to lean on others. No one can truly thrive alone, and a supportive community is essential.    ☑️ Work is important, but burnout can be disastrous. Look after your emotional wellbeing, especially when workplace challenges arise, and don’t forget to rest.    ☑️ Working toward workplace equality is an uphill battle, but not an impossible one! It's a love letter. To the women who built without permission, without funding, without the industry ever truly seeing them, and did it anyway. I'm Jessica, founder of Thriv-3 Media. And this month, we're slowing down to spotlight the brands and the women behind them that deserve far more than a February feature. Client News: Black Tech Saturdays continues to innovate with big things in store for 2026 including a powerful partnership with Michigan Central. Michigan Central is opening a 17,000-square-foot innovation and collaboration space called The Michigan Central Mezz. The Mezz will also be the home of the inaugural Black Tech Saturdays x Michigan Central membership cohort, a six-month program from April to October designed for entrepreneurs interested in becoming more immersed in the ecosystem. Last Sunday I had the honor of joining Black Girls in Social Work to lead an experiential, CEU-approved talk on the importance of nervous system regulation for Black women social workers. Why this matters: ✨ As Black women, we statistically carry the highest load of stress and wear-and-tear on our bodies. ✨ As social workers, the daily exposure to trauma compounds that impact. In our time together, I shared: • Why it’s vital for Black women to take a body-first approach to stress • How to understand our unique nervous systems and regulate based on state • What regulation really is—beyond what’s trending on TikTok • How somatic healing creates the foundation that makes cognitive modalities work more effectively, ultimately closing the gaps in supporting clients I was thrilled that another somatic practitioner was in the audience to help expand on how this work can layer with modalities like DBT—showing the breadth of what’s possible when we bring body and brain together. A huge thank you to Bodequia S. , founder of BGSW, for amplifying this work and creating such a fun, organized experience. And finally—gratitude to somatic work itself. It’s given me the capacity to stand on stage for an hour speaking about what I love. During my corporate career, I struggled with stage fright and imposter syndrome. Now, through this work, I’ve learned to be self-led and confident in spaces that once felt impossible.

What Does Success Really Cost Black Women? This is not anecdotal, this is measurable. The data is clear: success does not shield Black women from bias, overwork, or isolation. Here's what my ongoing research into the Excellence Tax™ shows: 1. 100% experience microaggressions, and 62.5% say it's frequent. 2. 100% suppress aspects of their identity to fit in. 3. 75% feel they must work harder than peers every single day. 4. The higher the role, the higher the emotional and health cost. 5. Success doesn't reduce bias — in many cases, it amplifies it. The Excellence Tax™ is the hidden cost of professional success for Black professionals paid in health, energy, and opportunity. It's not an individual failing. Part II If you are a hiring manager, executive leader, HR professional—or someone who genuinely cares about inclusion—there are concrete ways to combat the underemployment of Black women: • Audit your pipelines: Who’s being hired and promoted? Who’s being left behind? • Invest in sponsorship: Move beyond mentorship. Use your influence to advocate for Black women’s advancement. • Pay equitably: Black women should not have to negotiate themselves into fair compensation. • Create transparent pathways to leadership: Gatekeeping, vagueness, and “cultural fit” requirements often reinforce bias. • Listen—and believe: When Black women speak about their experience in the workplace, it is not a complaint; it is often a report from the frontlines of systemic inequity. Final Thought Underemployment isn’t just a labor issue—it’s a justice issue. If we are serious about equity, we must move beyond surface-level diversity and commit to valuing Black women not just for our labor, but for our leadership, our vision, and our brilliance. Black women are not hidden figures. We are present. We are prepared. We are more than enough. It’s time the workplace caught up. Let’s continue the conversation. Black women student-athletes this is for you! Women of color—particularly Black women—remain significantly underrepresented in podcasting and sports media. Research from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that only 6.6% of the top 100 podcasts feature a woman of color behind the microphone, highlighting a critical gap in representation and voice. This study seeks to explore if and how podcasting can serve as a transformative tool for Black female student-athletes, helping them elevate their voices, strengthen communication skills, build personal brands, and prepare for career opportunities beyond sport. We are specifically focused on Black female athletes ranging from junior year of high school through graduate-level college students who are actively participating in sports and navigating the intersections of identity, athletics, academics, and future career aspirations. Writing this book, I interviewed Black leaders who have mastered the art of navigating race in professional spaces. Their insights are both powerful and necessary. By examining the obstacles they face and the strategies they employ, we can gain a deeper understanding of the structures that shape Black professionals' work experiences. This understanding challenges us to reevaluate our workplaces and the day-to-day climate. It prompts us to ask: Do our policies truly support inclusion? By recognising the unseen hurdles black professionals navigate, we can look for other areas where systems may be failing individuals and take actionable steps to embed inclusive practices that ensure every employee has the opportunity to thrive. #Leadership #OrganisationalChange

The African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission is holding a public hearing next month to discuss "repairing yesterday" and "restoring equity." But I have a question for the taxpayers and the general public of this state: Where are our reparations for the fraud and theft actively being committed by the State of Illinois? Right now, an entrenched administrative syndicate at the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) is running a massive "ghost payroll" operation, draining federal grant funds to use as their own entitled, illegal slush fund. When my wife, Gina Rodriguez, an active IDHS timekeeper, blew the whistle on a $141,000 theft, the State didn't offer "equity." They offered destruction. On December 1, 2025, management issued a retaliatory order forcing Gina into a known toxic, hazardous facility. The engineered stress and environmental exposure caused her to suffer a massive stroke and hypertensive crisis. The State physically broke a female whistleblower to protect their theft. And now, the architects of this heist are actively covering it up—going so far as to weaponize a deceased administrator's (Stephanie Almond) IT credentials to retroactively scrub the digital audit logs. If we want to talk about "repairing harm," we need to start with the harm the State of Illinois is inflicting on its own public servants today. We are heading into an April 3rd Emergency Hearing fighting this corrupt machine entirely alone because they are trying to deny her medical care for the stroke they caused. We are publishing the forensic "Ghost Logs" on Substack today. (Link in the comments). It's time to demand accountability for the theft happening right now under our noses. Only 2 Black women lead Fortune 500 companies. Out of 500. Not because of a lack of talent. But because of a lack of access, opportunity, and sponsorship. When Black women are left out of leadership, we all miss out on powerful insight, innovation, and perspective. The BOP is building the pipeline to change that. Connecting Black professionals to mentors, community, and opportunity. Let’s not lose another generation of leaders before they’re seen.
